Fall is a natural time to think about trees. Our thoughts will return to them in the spring. This update contains ideas for you to use Idaho's trees and forests as your bookends for a year of learning. Check it out!


October 2000
It's time to thank our forests again! During Forest Products Week we consider all the benefits our forests provide, and our role in being good stewards of these ecosystems and their inhabitants. IFPC has ideas and opportunities, plus new materials to help you and your students observe this week and celebrate Idaho's forests all year.

The Forest Products Week Essay Contest is a great way for K-12 students to apply their writing skills. Winners receive a savings bond for themselves, plus a cash award for their class. Please contact us for more information: 208-334-4061. (Deadline: Oct. 29.)

Wait a minute... Isn't Arbor Day in the Spring? Yes it is, but you and your students get a head start on the poster contest this year!
Who is eligible? Idaho 5th graders.
Theme: Trees are Terrific...Up Close and Personal.
Deadline: Postmark entries by Nov. 15, 2000.
Prizes: First Place: $200 savings bond and entry in the National Arbor Day Poster Contest.
Second Place: $100 savings bond.
Third Place: $50 savings bond.
Teacher of each winner: $100 cash award.
School of each winner: Tree to plant for Arbor Day.
EVERY participating teacher: FREE Northwest Native Conifers poster (retails for $12).

National Project Learning Tree is providing grants ($200-$1000) for Green Works! Community Action Projects. October 5, 2000 is the deadline for applications.


GRANT GUIDLINES: Eligible grant recipients must:
  1. Be PLT trained
  2. Submit a maximum four page project proposal
  3. Enter projects that are community/school based and have student/youth participation
  4. Establish a partnership to implement the project (i.e. school/PTA, school/local business, Girl Scout troop/local business)
  5. Raise 50% project matching funds (may be in - kind services/time)
  6. Submit a mid-term and final report for all projects.
Project Proposals: To be eligible for review, the project proposal must include thoughtful descriptions and explanations for all the following items. Maximum 4 pages.

  1. One-page Summary. Please include the following:
    1. Applicant name, organization/school, address, phone, fax, email
    2. Project title
    3. Project abstract (30 words or less)
    4. Funding requested
    5. State and year of applicant's PLT training workshop

  2. Project Description: Please provide a detailed description of your project including:
    1. Measurable objectives
    2. List of project partners (organization names and role they play within the project)
    3. Project timeline/starting and completion dates
    4. Total project budget, including matching funds
    5. Name and mailing address of fiscal agent, if different from applicant.

Proposals must be sent by mail and postmarked by Oct. 5, 2000. (Email and Faxes not accepted.) Send proposals to: GreenWorks! Grants, 1111 19th St., NW #780, Washington DC 20036. Written acknowledgement of proposals will be sent by Nov. 5, 2000 and award notification made by Dec. 6, 2000.



A 15-hour version of the University of Idaho's popular "Wood -- A Remarkable Fiber" workshop will be offered November 5-6 in Boise and Coeur d'Alene. Includes hands-on activities, a field trip and many take-home goodies. Contact Jan at 208-885-9663 or jpitkin@uidaho.edu
