Complete road closures may appear to be a solution to costly road maintenance, but they also require the most preparation. Remember, water still runs on dosed roads. The drainage system of closed roads needs careful thought and attention.
- Upon completion of seasonal operations, the road surface should be crowned, outsloped, insloped, or cross-ditched. Remove berms from the outside edge where runoff is channeled.
- Leave abandoned roads in a condition that provides adequate drainage without further maintenance. Close these roads to traffic; reseed and/or scarify; and, if necessary, re-contour and provide cross ditches or drain dips.
