POTLATCH CONSUMER PRODUCTS and SEEDLING NURSERY
After a delicious breakfast, we started the day with a tour of the consumer products division at Potlatch Corporation's paper mill in Lewiston, Idaho. We saw the huge paper machines with pulp on the "wire" (plastic screen) flying by at nearly 40 mph. Huge rolls of soft paper were formed. These rolls were then converted into toilet tissue, paper towels and paper napkins. Then we visited Potlatch's seedling nursery, where 30 million new trees are grown each year to reforest harvested areas.

FIRE PROTECTION, FISH HATCHERY and DWORSHAK DAM
From there we went to Orofino, Idaho, where we were shown (with an airplane, helicopter and tank engines) how the Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association fights forest fires and sets prescribed fires to protect their timber resources. They put on quite a show for us! After that, we toured the national fish hatchery, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, where we learned about the life cycle of salmon, and the hatchery program. From there, we drove up the hill to Dworshak Dam, and learned about forest management and elk habitat from staff of the Army Corps of Engineers, while enjoying a delectable lunch.

ANCIENT CEDAR GROVE
Next, we took the bus through Headquarters and up the hill to Walker Park, an ancient cedar grove. We were thrilled to have Bill Walker, namesake of the park, and Royce Cox, long-time Potlatch forester who helped Bill preserve this magnificent stand of trees accompanying us. These two "elders" shared their life-long love of and experiences of managing forests for many benefits. We looked out over the valley while foresters shared their current management objectives and techniques. After feeling the highly productive soil containing ash from the eruption of Mt. Mazama (now Crater Lake), we finished the evening with a delicious barbecue provided by Potlatch employees and family members.
